A Macro map is used with materials, as one of the types of textures that may make up a material. It is a colored textures that has scaled UVs over the diffuse texture. It is used to hide the tiling within a texture.

The way it works, is that it takes the color of the macro map, adds it to the diffuse map, and divides by two, in order to derive the surface color that is rendered in the viewport.
